  • Thank you Verizon wireless…

…for absolutely DESTROYING my iPhone dreams. AGAIN.

Pretty iPhone, right? So, my family of three has been experiencing financial difficulties, so of course, one of the places to cut down on expenses is by keeping the cell phone bill as low as possible, right?   Right.  So, my mom and I had come to terms with the fact that we will probably never get iPhones, mainly because of the data package issue.  In the past, it’s always been $30 per phone per month, for unlimited data.

I say I’d come to terms with it, right?  Well then why am i so miffed right now?? Because my parents keep tossing the topic around and actually discussing how we COULD get iphones/a blackberry for my dad for his work.  At first, my mom and I thought we’d get one for my dad for Fathers Day.  But again, we just didn’t have that extra $30 per month.

Then, not too long ago, we convinced my dad to give up the cable for the TV.  Which, ta da! There’s our extra monthly money!  He could write the phone bill off as a business expense, because, well, it would be, for him.

So, feeling pretty good and getting kind of excited, I started checking out prices and packages on Verizon’s website.  And found that the unlimited data package no longer exists.

Ok, I thought, maybe I wouldn’t use that much data.  Let’s check out the approximation of the data usage calculator:

Email: send apprx 5 text only messages per day —> 1.46 MB/mo

Internet: viewing apprx 25 pages per day ————> 1.1 GB/mo

Video: streaming apprx 10 min of low res per day -> 1000MB/mo

Photos: upload apprx. 2 photos per day ————->  60 MB/mo

GRAND TOTAL of 2.14 GB per month

Ok, not too bad, I think. That can’t be too expensive, right?  Sure, it’s kind of a modest estimation (I basically wouldn’t be able to watch a ton of youtube videos or listen to pandora, but chya know, lifes a bitch).

To be on the safe side, I would want to get the larger plan, since they only come in 2,5,8, and 10 GB packages.  So for a 5GB monthly package for just MY phone…

    $50?!?!

Uhhh no. Never going to happen.

Where’d the unlimited package go?? Here’s what Verizon has to say…

You used to have a $30 unlimited data package. But today for $30, I would only get 2 GB?

Over 90% of our Smartphone customers use less than 2 GB per month. So the $30 / 2 GB Data Package is usually more than enough. With Wi-Fi® functionality on most devices and our data usage monitoring tools, there shouldn’t be any surprises at the end of the month.

I thought Verizon Wireless was supposed to have the best network. Why can’t you offer unlimited data anymore?

Our network is robust. We invest more than $6.5 billion annually to keep it that way. As we plan for the future, we need to have the tools in place that allow us to continue to provide the nation’s best and most reliable wireless network. Moving to a usage based pricing model helps us safeguard the superior experience our customers enjoy.

Basically, too much data was being used and they couldn’t keep up for just $30 per month.

    Merh. Phones are stupid.
